Pedata RV Center Defines Major Categories in the Industry, Class A, Class B and Class C Motorhome

Pedata RV Center defines the major categories into which all recreational vehicles fall: Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhome. Current definitions as presented by the industry standard RVIA (Recreational Vehicle Industry Association) leave many RVers and potential RVers wondering what characteristics define a RV and place it into one category over another.

Active RV and RV travel forum participants often find themselves discussing the differences between a Class A, a Class B and a Class C motorhome with newbies and veteran RVers alike. Veterans find themselves confused when they are attempting to upgrade/downsize to 2nd or 3rd vehicles. Newbies find themselves unable to define what they are looking for precisely enough to get a proper response at a dealership or from owners with used motorhomes for sale.

Pedata RV Center recognizes that loose definitions are versatile, but unhelpful when attempting to use them as a reference point. Thus the following are general definitions for the various classes of motor homes:

1.    The Class A motorhome. Class A’s are built on one of the following: a commercial bus chassis, a specially designed motor vehicle chassis, or a commercial truck chassis.
2.    The Class B motorhome. Class B’s are built using a conventional van. Construction depends upon either the addition of a raised roof or having the back replaced by a low-profile body (most call it coach built).
3.    The Class C motorhome. Class C’s are built on a truck chassis with an attached cab (usually van based). Class C’s are often based on the popular Ford E450 engine, cabs, and chassis (Dodge and Chevy are also popular choices). The larger version is often referred to as a toy hauler and may be based on a larger truck such as the F650. The Class C is easily recognized by the cab over style which often contains a bed or entertainment section.

Arguing over the title may seem silly, but it is a necessity for many to be able to identify either the motorhome that they own or the motorhome that they would like to own. Nothing is more helpful than being able to walk onto a dealer’s lot knowing what to ask for.

Pedata RV Center offers an extensive inventory of used motorhomes and/or RVs. All have a very detailed listing of features and specifications available for perusal by the public online.
