You’ve heard of the Class A. Most view it is the big guy on the road; the biggest of the RVs. You’ve also heard of the fifth wheel and the travel trailer. They’re both trailers, but the fifth wheel requires a fifth wheel hitch and can be just as big as the Class A while the travel trailer is typically the smallest of the RVs and requires only the traditional hitch and fairly small tow vehicles. We’ve discussed the Class B recently and cleared up any confusion there. Now it’s time to talk about the Class C motorhomes.
What’s good about the Class C motorhomes?
They’re affordable and family friendly. They offer many of the same conveniences of the Class A without the high price tag typically associated with the luxury RVs. They offer better fuel mileage and are shorter in length than the Class A’s which makes them easier to maneuver. The Class A RV is built on a van type chassis with a van cab for the driver and passenger seat. They usually fall into the range of 20 to 43 feet in length.
There is usually a sleeping area worked into the design above the cab area as well as a second full bedroom towards the rear of the unit. Many prefer this design for privacy reasons when traveling with guests or children. The Class C’s interior space is greatly enhanced by carefully placed slideouts (also common in the Class A).
Disadvantages that may lead RVers away from the purchase of a Class C include: less payload in comparison to the Class A and limited towing capacity.
